The PHC 09 Elite team started their Quebec journey by earning an EHF Elite bid during the first two months of the 2021-2022 season.  The team went 7-1 in qualifying to secure the tournament bid. Doing so they became the 6th team from Rhode Island to participate in the tournament's 62 year history.  This past week the team traveled to Quebec City for the prestigious event at the AAA level, the highest in the tournament.  The 09s opened the tournament with an exhibition game win over Canada’s Burnaby Winter Club Bruins 5-3.  The following game was another exhibition win over Hungary Talent 2-1.  For the first "Q" Tournament game, PHC matched up against the #1 ranked team in Canada, the Huron Perth Lakers.  The setting for the game was the world class Videotron Centre, home of the QMJHL Quebec Remparts.  After a quick start by the Lakers the 09s found themselves down 3-0 early. The PHC 09s then went into battle mode.  While losing 4-2, the stage was set for an epic run deep into the tournament.  Following the loss the team faced off in a mid-tournament exhibition against RIGA HS Latvia.  Heading into their second "Q" game, PHC faced elimination with another loss. PHC went up against a strong Toronto based team, the Markham Majors from the GTHL. PHC started the game off hot taking a quick 3-0 goal lead.  Markham battled back and the game headed to OT, 4-4. At 1.29 into 3 v 3 overtime, the 09's scored to win the game 5-4. The team would next face Oakville Rangers, the #1 ranked team in the South Central AAA Ontario Hockey League in the Quarter Finals.  The 09s were again up to whatever adversity would be dealt to them.  After the first period, the game was played to a tight 1-1 tie.  Midway through the second the 09s would take a 2-1 lead.  The team continued to battle through a physical game and their selfless play embodied by many blocked shots resulting in two players missing time in the 3rd period. PHC was able to get the empty netter for a 3-1, but exhausting, win to advance to the semifinals against the Montreal Canadiens. Worn down and battling injuries, the 09s had little time to recover before playing in the semifinals on Saturday evening in front of hundreds of Montreal Canadiens fans. The Canadiens were represented by the top players from the Montreal area with large margins of victory throughout the tournament. The 09s valiant efforts fell short to the Canadiens who ended up moving on to the final and beat the defending champions Czech Knights to win the Quebec Pee-Wee International Hockey Tournament. Providence Hockey Club is proud of what the players accomplished.  They represented the program, the state of Rhode Island and themselves with honor. Making memories in and around the rink in Quebec City will last for years to come.  The Providence Hockey Club 09 Elite team would like to thank all our families and local businesses and other sponsors who helped us on our journey to the "Q".
